How the figures are read

Every dollar figure, ratio and date is copied from the filing that printed it, and every count is a count of the rows those filings hold. Three shares are divided, each by net patient revenue from the same filing: charity care, uncompensated care and income from service to patients. Positions and distributions — a hospital’s percentile, a median, a middle half, a tenth-to-ninetieth range — are counted over a set of hospitals that each one names. One year is set against another: an as-submitted year’s net patient revenue against the same hospital’s prior filed year, printed as a factor where it is more than 2. Nothing else is calculated.
